History of Credit Union Movement in The Gambia
The Short Story: The roots of the cooperative movement can be traced back to early mutual aid systems. In response to economic challenges, community leaders and workers sought cooperative models to offer low-cost financial services and build local capital. Credit unions emerged as sustainable financial structures where members saved together and provided low-interest loans to one another, driving community development and self-reliance.
Across West Africa, cooperative credit initiatives flourished throughout the 20th century. By pooling resources and maintaining shared operational principles, early credit unions created reliable avenues for small business growth, agriculture support, and family financial stability.
